In Italian, W means VIVA! This is the title of the Site Specific work, realized by Acaymo S. Cuesta in collaboration with the Center of Art de La Regenta in San Potito Sannitico. The work is inspired by a pro-republican inscription made in Italy in 1946, after a referendum held to choose the Republic or the Monarchy. A person from San Potito Sannitico painted the sentence “W LA REPUBBLICA W TOGLIATTI W MATTEOTTI”, even today perfectly legible on the door of one of the palaces of the country, Palazzo Lello. In the light of this event, the work focuses on history preceding this act of rebellion and on what feelings drove the author to realize it.
However, the goal is not to inform about the story, but to establish a relationship between the past and the present. Indeed, the following layers of black ink cover the texts in order to hide all the painful events suffered by the Italian people. A metaphor of the current politic that seems to forget all the good ideals.
